Job Description

Role Summary:

The Research Fellow will work at The Food Forests’ Abu Ghraib farm, supporting both daily operations and applied research in regenerative agriculture and permaculture systems. This role combines hands-on farming (irrigation, planting, composting, animal care) with research-related responsibilities (data collection, documentation, reporting). The ideal candidate is open-minded, curious, and passionate about science, sustainability, and continuous learning.

Key Responsibilities:

– Manage and monitor irrigation systems for efficient water use.
– Participate in planting, cultivation, and harvesting cycles.
– Operate and monitor composting systems (thermophilic compost, chicken composting, worm bins, biochar).
– Care for chickens and other farm animals, ensuring integration into farm systems.
– Collect and record data from farm activities, trials, and experiments.
– Maintain digital records (Excel, reports, photos) for research and reporting.
– Support ongoing research projects, experiments, and workshops hosted on the farm.
– Provide feedback and suggestions to improve systems and outcomes.
– Collaborate with management and research partners to share findings.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

– Good English skills (reading and hearing).
– Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, email, data entry, reporting).
– Open-minded mentality with a love for science, experimentation, and sustainability.
– Ability to learn new skills quickly and apply them in practice.
– Strong organizational skills and responsibility in carrying out tasks.
– Farming or livestock experience is an advantage, but not required (training will be provided).

Working Conditions:

– Full-time job, 40 hours per week.
– On-site residency is required, the Research Fellow must live on the farm.
– Combination of outdoor farming activities and indoor research/documentation work.
– Accommodation is provided on-site.

Compensation & Benefits:

– 600,000 IQD per month.
– Accommodation provided with electricity, heating, internet, and all related services fully paid by the employer.
